My dog with IMPA is lethargic after steroid taper. Is it a relapse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 26 days old | 7 lbs

My toy poodle has a condition called IMPA. He has been on steroids for 3 weeks. 2 weeks of 5mg and he was doing well so reduced to 2.5mg. He was doing well but now he seems to have gone downhill showing all the symptoms he had before: lethargic, yelping on movement and walking on his tiptoes. Is it possible he has relapsed and needs to be put on higher steroids again.

Clyde is adorable! I'm sorry that he's having these issues! I think it is likely that he has relapsed and may need to resume a higher steroid dose. Treating autoimmune disorders like IMPA can be difficult because sometimes as you taper the steroid the signs of lameness and pain resume. Because steroid use can cause some side effects I would recommend calling your veterinarian before increasing the steroid dose because they know all of Clyde's history and can best advise you of dose adjustments. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Clyde is feeling better soon!
