My dog wakes up early to eat grass. Is he sick? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | 5 years and 7 months old

So my dog has been getting up at 5am every morning this week begging to go outside. When I let him out he runs to eat grass until I pick him up and stop him. Our vet had told us to split his meals and give him a little lettuce before bed so he gets a meal at 5:30 and at 8pm. Is there something wrong with him? Should I be concerned? What else can I do?

Hey! thanks for using pet coach. I am unsure about the eating lettuce part of the above information. I know it will not hurt Charlie but unsure if it will help. It is possible he is having diarrhea, maybe a urinary tract infection or even an upset belly. I would recommend watching him when he defecates to see if it diarrhea. Also take a urine sample to our vet to rule out an infection. You can safely give an over the counter anti acid each day too. This might help calm the stomach. hope that helps
