My new puppy has diarrhea and vomiting. Is it normal for a new dog?

My new puppy (only had for almost 10 hrs) is having stomach issues. Her stomach is gurggling and she has thrown up once with dirheara. But it is only when I take her out. She is happy but her stomach will not stop. I am feeding her the same food her previous owner was. Is she just having digestive problems or?????

I'm sorry Bella isn't doing well at the moment! It could be that she is suffering from a GI illness or may have eaten something that has upset her stomach. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for a couple of hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, you see blood in the diarrhea, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Hi there and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! I'm sorry to hear Bella is continuing to have vomiting and diarrhea. You may try withholding food for 12 hours (she can have water) and then try refeeding her the boiled chicken, rice, and I'd add a little plain canned pumpkin in there (not the pie filling) to see if that helps. If not, then I'd recommend Bella see her veterinarian as soon as possible to have her evaluated so she can get treated. I hope this helps and thank you for posting!

Poor Maxiie! He could have a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or could have pancreatitis. I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Congrats on your new family member! Gracie has gone through a lot of transitions in the last few days, including a food change. Dogs, and especially puppies, often get upset stomach with a rapid diet change. Puppies can also get gastrointestinal parasites that cause diarrhea and vomiting. You could try switching her to a bland diet of boiled low-fat chicken breast and rice for about 5 days and then gradually, over the next 5 days, switch her to her new long-term puppy food. However if the vomiting or diarrhea continues, she should be seen by your vet to rule out parasites or a more serious problem as puppies can quickly become dehydrated.

I'm sorry that Bella is not feeling well. If this has been going on for 12-24 hours and she is also lethargic or having a poor appetite, I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian today. If this has just started and she seems normal and happy otherwise, you could try fasting her for 12-24 hours. If she doesn't continue to vomit or have diarrhea, introduce a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and white rice. If she keeps that down, then after a day or so you can start mixing in her normal kibble. If her symptoms continue despite that, I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian. They may recommend blood work and x-rays of her abdomen since there are many different causes of her symptoms. It could be inflammation in her GI tract from eating something new or different, pancreatitis, or a blockage in her stomach or intestines. I hope this helps and that Bella starts feeling better soon!

Diarrhea and throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Daisy for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
