My dog whining, hunched after neuter/hernia surgery. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 11 months and 26 days old | 36 lbs

I took my dog to get neutered today. He also had a hernia corrected while there. For the first 2/3 hours we were home he would lay down gingerly and almost sleep but fight going all the way to sleep. For the last 6 hours or so he has not laid down and has been whining consistently. We have been tryk to coax him to lay down, cuddle, play but don't want to force him. When he walks he keeps his legs as far apart as possible and stays kind or hunched and curled up. Is this normal??

Poor Silverado! It sounds like he is in pain, it from your description it sounds like the pain is more than what is expected. Typically dogs are sent home with pain medications, and if you have some, check when his next dose is due. Should he be due for some and it doesn't help or he doesn't have any, I would take him immediately into a vet. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
