Tapeworm? My dog has rice-like worms. Can it spread to pets or humans?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

I noticed worms in my dogs stool yesterday!! Kinda looked like rice but they moved! Today I've pulled a few off his butt and had one moving on a blanket he layed on! Is this tapeworm, and can my other dogs get it? This was a shelter dog I rescued 2 months ago! Can humans get these from him?

Oh my, it does sound like Mayhem has tapeworms! Yes, your other dogs can get tapeworms, but they are not directly contagious. Dogs get them from fleas, but it's uncommon for humans to get tapeworms. I would make sure all your dogs are up to date on their flea treatments and take them all into the vet first thing Monday. They need a medication called praziquantel, which is available by prescription only from the vet, to treat the tapeworms. Drontal contains praziquantel and is an excellent dewormer. I hope this helps!
