My dog ate a banana peel. What are the risks and what should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 13 lbs

Ok so I left my house for 10 minutes and for some reason I left a half eaten banana on the table. My dogs at the whole banana including the skin peel she didn’t eat the hard top. Maybe some hard part but mostly all there. Should I be worried?

Bananas are ok for dogs to eat, not sure the banana peel will be easy to digest though. Keep an eye on Jax to make sure he doesn't stop eating or develop a stomach ache. Jax should be fine if he chewed up the banana peel, if not he could develop an intestinal obstruction. As long as he's eating, drinking and pooping normally there is nothing to be worried about. If he should start vomiting, not eating or straining to poop then please take him in right away for an exam and X-ray. Sometimes large things are not able to pass through and they need to be surgically removed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Jax.

While they aren't toxic to your dog, banana peels are hard to digest and could make your dog sick or cause intestinal blockage. You should take him to a veterinarian right away if you notice any signs of sickness, digestive issues, or blockage.
