Can I use my doxycycline or expired cream to treat my dog's Demodex?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 6 years and 6 months old | 75 lbs

My dog has had Demodex a few times in the past. It looks like it came back. It looks like the same exact thing. I was prescribed doxycycline hyclate 100 mg capsules for myself a month or so back before they switched my antibiotic. Can I give them to her and if so how many. I know doxycycline is prescribed for specific conditions. Can it help with demodex? Also I have entederm cream but it expired last year. If I do use the cream will it have any negative effect or will it just not work?

Demodex is a mite, not a bacteria, so doxycycline will not help at all. I would hesitate to use entederm because it has a steroid in it and steroids can cause demodex lesions to flare or get worse. Please call your veterinarian to discuss different therapies available to treat her.
