My 8-year-old Lab has hip pain and won't walk after jumping. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 8 years and 5 months old | 85 lbs

my 8 1/2 year old Labrador retriever injured himself about 9 hours ago while jumping out of the back of my Nissan Rogue after a 2 mile hike. He is reluctant to walk and is in obvious pain despite giving him glucosamine and Deramaxx 75mg. The pain seems to be in the hips and not isolated to either hind leg. No obvious deformities or swelling. He has always been healthy and weighs 85 pounds.

As this is an acute injury it may take time until the pain stops (even with pain killers). glucosamine does not have any effect on acute injuries but Deramaxx should help. it's important you keep rocky completely rested for several days until you can see a significant improvement. if you judge that there is no improvement at all and that the pain is severe, you should bring him to the vet to get it checked and treated ASAP.
