My dog keeps scratching & biting his skin. What's wrong? How to treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | 3 years and 5 months old

My dog has been scratching and biting all over his skin. I have already taken him to the vet 3 time and nothing. ! I researched and began to give him coconut oil and they did reduce a little. What is this? And how do I treat it?

That scale I see in the pictures can be from multiple problems. If a skin scrape hasn't been done to look for mites I would ask for one to be done. A mite called cheyletiella causes thick crusting like that and can be difficult to find/ prove. Frontline, an over the counter flea and tick prevention can treat it if that is the problem. However, other mites, skin infections, allergies, and other immune mediated diseases can also cause skin problems like this. Please continue to work with your veterinarian. I know not having an answer right away is hard but sometimes multiple testing / examinations are needed to fine the cause. I hope Oliver gets better soon!
