My young dog bunny hops on one leg. Is this normal or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 75 lbs

Since having my dog, she has always done a bunny hop when she runs. I touch her legs and apply pressure, but it doesn't seem to bother her. It's mainly on one back leg. She kind of carries it when she runs, or will do a bunny hop run. I got her 6 months ago and she's turning 2 in a couple months. Is this normal or a sign of something serious? It's concerning because of how young she is and the shelter never told me about it.

Hi and thanks for posting! Bunny hopping in dogs can be a sign of hip dysplasia but not always. An x-ray can be taken of the hips to determine if signs of hip dysplasia is present. Bunny hoppingn or a awkward gait can also be a sign of luxation of the knee caps (patellar luxation). If you are concerned you can always get a few x-rays done to check. Patellar luxation can be daignosed by palpstion if the knee during an exam. I hope this helps! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
