My dog had severe surgery for internal injuries. Can he survive?

My dog had surgery today his stomach was hanging out of the lining and his intestines we're sliced and severely damage could he possibly survive he's 1years old

Oh no, I'm so sorry to read this, poor Rocco! Vets can do amazing things in surgery, and they wouldn't have taken him to surgery if they didn't feel that there was a chance of saving him. Based on this, I would suspect there is a chance he can survive, but without seeing him in person I can't say for certain. He's in the best hands possible at the moment, and I certainly hope he will survive!!

IF the mass is located on an organ that is safe to remove, then good. If it is attached to the spleen or uterus, those can be safely removed and dogs recover well and live comfortable without those parts. However, it should be sent off for analysis to see if it is cancer or not as that can affect the time and quality of life after. If the mass is attached to the stomach or liver, then it may not be able to be removed and you will be forced to make the decision to not wake her up from the surgery or wake her up and let her live a comfortable life for however amount of time that may be.

I am so sorry to hear of your dog. I think this is a personal decision and there is no right or wrong answer. Some part of the decision may be financial, as surgery and aftercare can be quite costly and with a low chance of successful outcome then this must be considered. We wouldn't want someone to take money they need to pay their rent to attempt a surgery with a low success rate. That being said, you may be in a financial position where this isn't a concern. Then I would discuss with the vet what quality of life is expected to be if surgery is successful. If chemotherapy or other treatment might be required and the side effects/cost of this. You must also realize that if the surgery is unsuccessful then your dog's final days may be in a hospital instead of at home. If you are not ready to say goodbye or give up, however, then surgery may be the way to go. It is a very personal decision.

Chances of recovery would depend on the damage that has affected the stomach before resection. I can say that usually chances are fairly good. A small amount of blood is perfectly normal after this type of surgery and some vomiting episodes as well (both are due to the surgery and gastrointestinal inflammation). Not necessarily. It depends on the cause of the mass. Now if it’s a splenic hemangiosarcoma, the life expectancy with surgery is three months, and that’s if Bessy survives the surgery. The mass could be something like an abscess, but I can’t say for certain. You can try to give her a chance, and maybe luck will be in your favor and it’s not cancer. But if it is cancer, letting her go is the kindest option. I hope this helps.

Poor Kitten!! Without examining your kitten and seeing the results of any diagnostic tests, it is hard to determine the prognosis. I am assuming he has a diaphragmatic hernia that needs to be repaired. I have treated cats that have survived that surgery but your vet is probably the best person to give you advice on the prognosis. You could always take the kitten to a board certified veterinary surgeon and get a second opinion. Whoever kicked your kitten should be charged with animal abuse. That is really sad that someone would do that to an innocent kitten.

Please help. I went to the vet to have my puppy checked. When we got there, I told them what was happening (diarrhea, retching, and blood in stool), they took a sample of his blood didnt get much because it was difficult for them to find his vein. WB
Yes, it was the right decision, without taking him to the vet he would have zero chance to survive, now at least he stands a fighting chance. he is very young so overall i would say his chances are not very good, but you never know, with the correct treatment he might perk back up and survive this.

Poor Willow! A lot of dogs recover fully after having diaphragmatic hernia surgery but it really depends on her current condition and if she has any other injuries. Your vet should be able to give you a better idea of her prognosis. Surgery should be done as soon as possible. Hope she recovers quickly.

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear that you're having this problem. I agree that it would be an unusual coincidence to see two dogs in the same household get pyometra at the same time, but not impossible. It would help to know exactly what tests have been done and what the results were, in order to give an opinion on whether this is likely to be the problem or not. If Tillie does have a pyometra, then surgery would definitely be indicated. Survival isn't guaranteed, but in my experience the majority of dogs with pyometra do well with immediate surgery and hospitalization for IV fluids and supportive care.

It sounds like tour friends dog will need to surgery to save its life. Unfortunately, if the obstruction has not passed yet it is unlikely that it will. The longer the surgery is delayed the higher the likelihood that the bowel tissue will be damaged and cannot heal. There is also a risk that the bowel can perforate causing the dog to become septic. It is important that the surgery be performed immediately in order to give the dog the best chance of survival.
