Why is my new mom dog hiding and restless after giving birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 11.6 lbs

I have a pomeranian/american eskimo female dog, who turned 1, less than a month ago. She recently gave birth 5 days ago. She has diarrhea since then and haven't been eating, but the vet prescribed medication for them. But he doesn't have answer to her abnormal behaviour. She would walk in and out of her whelping box and look for tight dark places to hide all the time. Especially at night around 3am-6am, she wouldn't/barely sleep and would wander around the room, searching for places to hide?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bella! I think you need to bring her in to your vet again and have her rechecked. I specifically would ask them to check her calcium levels. Low calcium can manifest as very bizarre behavior and can be life threatening if not treated. If it isn't low calcium and she isn't better, it is still best to have her looked at again. Sometimes it can take some time for first time Mother's to accept their babies. Just keep putting her in the whelping box and allow the baby to nurse. I hope this helps and I wish you the best!
