Why wait until 6 months for puppy to swim? Pool safety concerns?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 16 days old | 75 lbs

Hi, my puppy has had only his first shot (for deworming, parvovirus, etc.) and our vet said to wait until he is about six months of age to allow him to go swimming in our pool. I would just like to know why he needs to be a certain age, and what the potential dangers are of letting him swim in our pool earlier. Thank you! P.S. There are no harmful chemicals used in out pool.

That's a very good question. Honestly, I might ask your vet why they recommended that. I can't think of any reason that a puppy can't swim except for safety reasons. I used a lifevest for my puppy when he was young to be safe and NEVER allowed him unsupervised or with any other dogs. But I think it's a great idea for puppies to be exposed to swimming and is a great way for them to burn off some extra energy. Congrats on your new baby! I hope that was helpful! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
