Why is my senior dog suddenly unsteady, panting, and circling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 70 lbs

I have an older dog that recently had a issues with her balance. She's not steady on her feet- esp in her back legs. Today she's been acting weird, constantly moving, super heavy panting, circling and she keeps moving her head and eyes back and forth. It's a little unsettling with the sudden change. She finally settling down when I moved her bed onto the carpet. Should she see a vet soon?

She does need to see a vet as soon as you can as this sounds like a neurological problem. It may be a stroke, an inner ear infection, or vestibular disease. Your vet will examine her and start her on medicine to help with the dizziness and off balance so she can rest. Most regain normal function with time and treatment.

It sounds to me like your dog may have vestibular syndrome. I suggest you get her to your vet for an exam. They can prescribe some medications that will be safe for her to take with her heart condition that will make her feel better. Of course, she may not have vestibular syndrome and it could be something else entirely (like a severe middle ear infection or even a brain tumor). It is impossible for me to diagnose over the internet. Here is a link to an article about vestibular syndrome in dogs that may give you more information: https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?A=564 I strongly suggest that if you want to help be more comfortable and recover more quickly then you need to get her to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
