My dog has kennel cough and won't drink. What helps a sore throat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 6 years and 4 months old | 54 lbs

My dog has kennel cough, I notice her not really wanting to drink. It it because her throat hurts from coughing so much. If so what can I do. The vet put her on antibiotics and cough meds. She's acting her normal self other wise, eating peeing pooping. But cough is bad

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Vega! If she is acting normal and eating you just may need to give the medications some time to work. You can add water to her food to increase water intake. Also if she eats canned food that has more water in it. Kennel cough can take 2 weeks to resolve. Just watch for loss of appetite, lethargy, yellow or green nasal discharge or a change in cough (more moist) that may indicate pneumonia. I hope this helps and I wish Vega a speedy recovery!
