My dog inhaled smoke, vomiting white foam & dry heaving. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 26 lbs

A aluminum pot was left on my stove for four hours with the burner on. There was no fire thank god, but the smoke was horrible. Mica was in the apartment in the bedroom trying to avoid some of the smoke. He does not want to eat or drink anything now. He is throwing up white foam and has the dry heaves. I took a syringe and gave him a little at the time of gator aid but he just throws it up. I am disable living on a fixed income, is there anything I can do to help him. Please help me.

Hi and thanks for your post. It is hard to say what exactly is going on with Mica without examine him first, but I can offer some insight. If Mica is vomiting, I would not feed him anything for the next few hours except water. After that you may resume his normal food or boiled chicken and rice for for a day. If he continues to vomit and dry heaves, however, or starts to become very lethargic, Mica should see his veterinarian right away as vomiting and dry heaving can be a signal of something more serious. Best to you and Mica and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
