My old dog has a painful lipoma. Is surgery safe for his age?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 11 years and 11 months old | 72 lbs

My 12 year old golden doodle is fairly healthy except for his poor eye sight, poor hearing and some arthritis. he has a good healthy diet, is walked daily and hugged a lot. My concern is he has Lipomas on his body but there is one behind his back knee that has gotten larger and causing him pain. He is on pain and inflammatory meds but refuses to put weight on it unless he has to. The vet wants to operate and remove this Lipoma. I'm ok with it but worried because of his age. Any advice. Thanks

Poor Bailey! There is always a risk with anesthesia but it sounds like the benefits of removing the lipoma outweighs the risks since he is experiencing so much discomfort with the lipoma. Your vet can run blood-work prior to the procedure to make sure all his organs are functioning correctly. If his blood-work looks normal and he doesn't have any major medical issues then the risk of anesthesia is very low.
