My dog's hind legs twitch when standing still. What's the problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 7 lbs

I've noticed that my chawawa has recently developed a twitch in her hips and hind legs when she is standing still. She seems to be ok otherwise. What could cause this?

It could be a muscle spasm caused by a sprain/strain, neurological disorder, etc. If it continues, have your vet take a look at her to determine if treatment is needed. She may need an anti-inflammatory to treat the problem.

It could be a type of seizure activity. The other possibility would be a muscle problem. I suggest you video her doing this and then show it to your vet. They will be able to help you better after seeing it.

Without seeing what he is doing, it is hard to know the cause. It could that he is nervous but he could also have a neurological problem. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at him. You could record him and show your vet so your vet can actually see what he is doing and then decide if any treatment is needed.
