What litter is safe for my cat's sensitive, infection-prone paws?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 12 years and 8 months old

I have a 13 year old indoor cat with very sensitive skin. She is prone to skin infections regularly. When she uses litter box, sand gets stuck in between her back toes and she gets infection at that spot with swelling and redness. I tried to apply kiskin lotion but she licks off the same immediately hence healing is not possible. Please suggest.

I would recommend using shredded paper in her litter box instead of sand or litter if she has infected toes. Do not apply topical medication. If she is licking her feet excessively she may need an e-collar or something to help prevent her from licking. If it is very infected or painful then she really needs to see a veterinarian to determine if she needs antibiotics. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
