My puppy's first heat: Is she in pain or just sleeping a lot?

My baby got her period for the first time ever!! Do dogs feel pain too like women do? My puppy is not being as playful she is sleeping a lot. Is this normal? Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 9 days old | 6 lbs

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dogs do not appear to develop pain like women do thankfully. She may though become less playful perhaps at the beginning though she should come around fairly quickly. If no improvement is observed, have her evaluated by your veterinarian.
