My female budgie is aggressive to the male. Should I separate them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | 0.0772 lbs

So I got 2 budgies last month. One is a male and the other a female. The male is almost tamed and step up easily while the female refuses to but also eat from my hand and she let me caress her. Shes also being aggressive towards the male and tries to hurt him. Should I separate them? And can I take the male alone out of his cage if the female is refusing to step up or what? NB: They are really jealous of each other.

If the female is being aggressive with the mail, I would definitely separate them for now at least. Keep them in cages near each other so they can acclimate to each other. If you prefer keeping them together, or are planning to breed they may need a larger cage or aviary. Having them in separate cages may also make training and handling a bit easier. This book is a great general resource for bird care and behavior. It's written by an avian veterinarian and an animal behaviorist. https://www.chewy.com/birds-dummies/dp/143624?utm_source=google-product
