Why did my gerbil chew its dead cagemate's face? Fight or post-death?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

1 of 2 gerbils died and it looked like the other chewed its nose and mouth off. Do you think it was a fight or post death? They are almost 3 years old and the one that died was thin and breathing fast last night but eating ok. The one that is living sometimes bullied her sister.

I am sorry for your loss. I am unsure about what caused the original trauma to the nose. It is possible that the gerbil did nibble on the nose after it passed or sometimes when a gerbil is sick the others will start to pick on them knowing they are going to die. I hope that helps
