My cat killed a mouse. Are there health risks I should know about?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

I recently came home to a dead mouse in my house. I am assuming my cat killed it while I was out. Should I be concerned about my cat's health because it came in contact with a mouse? Or is it probably not that big of a deal? Cat seems to be doing just fine

If your cat didn't eat it, health risks would be minimal. The main secondary issues from hunting are tapeworms (if they eat the mouse) and issues from fleas (so I would apply a good prevention like Revolution of Advantage Multi). Another consideration would be to make sure you don't have rodenticide poisons anywhere because if they caused the mouse's death and then your cat ate it (or a future mouse!) then they would also be exposed to it!
