Why is my old dog still pacing and uncomfortable on pain meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | neutered | 14 years and 8 months old | 14 lbs

My older toy poodle has arthritis and a pinched nerve in his back. We normally take him to get cold laser treatment when he is uncomfortable (walking around constantly, stumbling, won't sit/lay down for longer than a minute) and he usually feels better after. Last night, it didn't seem to help. He is on Carprofen, Tramadol, Furosemide, Enacard, and Gabapentin for his pain and heart condition. He has not stopped moving around this morning except for when I held him. Could it be something else?

Hi and thank you for your post. From what it sounds like, Tommy has several issues going on. It is hard to say exactly what is causing his pacing this morning without seeing Tommy first, but given his past history from what you told me, it does sound like Tommy is in some discomfort. Pain associated with arthritis or the pinched nerve could be a possibility especially if he has exhibited this same type of behavior when he in uncomfortable. If he is having trouble breathing or seeing to be panting hard, coughing, etc, he may be in discomfort from his heart condition worsening. If you are concerned, you can always take him into his vet today for a check up. He may be adjustment on his medications or given additional pain meds. Best wishes to you and Tommy!
