How to prevent bird mom from abandoning chicks and ensure survival?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed

Noshi laid three eggs & the babies are about 2 weeks old. I'm worried that she'll abandon the smallest like last time. She ignored it & wouldn't feed it. It became weak. I hand fed it until it was strong enough to ask for food & she fed it after that. The food had boiled egg & was homemade. Is there anything I can do to so she doesn't abandon it? Any homemade food I can give if she abandons it? Last time, all of them only survived a few months as they got sick and died. How do I prevent this?

Keep the nest box clean. You can gently scoop the chicks up in a paper towel, clean the box, add clean nesting material and return the chicks. Make sure Noshi is eating a healthy. Ideally, she should be eating a commercial pelleted diet such as Exact or Pretty Bird. You can supplement with a fortified seed mix and fresh fruits and vegetables. Monitor the chicks for full crops (which means they are being fed) and weight gain. If necessary, a commercial hand feeding formula can be used to supplement the chicks.
