Hi. I have a puppy who got his first distemper shot at 8 weeks and got his second at 12 weeks. I am planning to give a third shot at week 16 as a last shot but my vet nurse told me that she needs to get a 4th shot. Is it essential? I saw it online that as long as the puppy gets his last shot after week 16, he does not need a 4th shot. Also, when can i start walking my puppy after the last distemper shot? Thank you.

Congo your puppy! As long as more than 4 weeks has not passed since his last booster, then 16 weeks can be his final distemper booster and he should be set to go outside and not require another puppy booster. He is also old enough for his rabies vaccine so he should have that vaccination done by a vet.

4 weeks is too early and any vaccine given at that age will not be effective as the puppy has maternal antibodies which will fight the vaccine. When the puppy is six weeks old then this vaccination makes more sense as some puppies have lost these maternal antibodies and need a vaccine to protect them especially against parvo. Some still have these maternal antibodies at 6 weeks and therefore will also destroy the vaccine. This is why your puppy will need 4 courses of vaccines from 6 weeks on.
