Why is my dog drooling excessively but acting normal? Vet or wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 65 lbs

Hi, I just want to query about my daughters dog which I am looking after while she is on holiday. He started salivating more than he would normally yesterday and is still today. He is otherwise fine, eating, drinking, running around after ball. Maybe missing daughter somewhat. He's a German Shepherd /wolfdog, 18months old. Do I take him to vets or monitor it foe a couple of days. Regards Caron Smith

I would watch it for 24 hours. Hypersalivation can be caused by many different things, including nausea, licking something that tastes bad, difficulty swallowing, oral pain, among a few others. If Harvey starts vomiting or is refusing to eat or drink, he should be seen as soon as possible. If the hypersalivation is still going on in 24 hours, he should also be evaluated by a vet.
