My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel died suddenly. Was drooling a sign?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 6 years and 9 months old

My dog, Sadie, died 3 weeks ago and I need to find out what happened. She was a King Charles spaniel cavalier. She was absolutely fine throughout the entire day, but died very suddenly and silently. The only thing we noticed was a big pool of drool, but we thought this was normal as she usually drooled. She was 6. Please help me.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! As a breed, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels tend to be very prone to heart problems. Sadie was most likely to have passed because of a heart condition known as mitral valve endocarditis. There are other possibilities, but this is the most likely. It leads to congestion of the lungs and basically causes them to drown in their own serum. Without an exam before and after Sadie's death, it is hard to know for sure. I hope this brings you some peace. May you find comfort in your time of grief.
