My dog has bad breath and sleeps a lot. Could it be kidney disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 53 lbs

Hi! I have a double merle male Aussie (approx. 1.5 years). His breath smells like urine pretty frequently and he seems to sleep quite a bit. He's been this way since I got him last November, and I had some blood tests done on April 27th this year and his BUN and creatinine levels were high inaddition to his SDMA levels. That indicates early onset kidney disease, so I had them do a complete urinalysis. His urine was dark yellow, slightly cloudy, and had a pH of 7.

Hi, thank you for using PetCoach! From your post, I gather you are wondering what other testing and/or therapies are appropriate to maximize Finley's life span and quality of life. For testing, I would be interested in his urine specific gravity, a urine protein:creatinine ratio, leptospirosis titers (unless vaccinated for lepto), tick titers, and abdominal ultrasound. I would also be interested in more of his medical history. This would be a good case for a consult if you are interested, and I am available through this system. Things that tend to help are Increasing Finley's water intake, putting him on a diet lower in protein (typically prescription), keeping him on medications that prevent gastroduodenal ulceration, and some supplements help. Cranberry extract-based supplements are a neutraceutical class of supplement meaning they are not regulated by the FDA and do not have a lot of research behind them. That said, one I would recommend is this: Nutramax Crananidin Pet Supplement, 75 Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0077CYK6E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xWmUzbACQAY5N Give as labeled. I am sorry Finley has such a significant disease and hope he does well! I hope you find this information helpful!
