Why does my dog's urine leakage seem to stop with antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 60 lbs

Can incontinece due to an ectopic ureter be cured by antibiotics? If a dog has an ectopic ureter would they leak urine consistently? Would it go away and return? Her urinary leakage and incontinece has gone away each time she has been on antibiotics. This time we are on day 5 of treatment and she still dribbles a very small amount sometimes but I wonder if this is due to her recessed vulva. I have been paying attention more this time so may be I didn't notice it took longer to go away previously

Antibiotics would not help ectopic ureter, so I would definitely question the diagnosis if urine leakage suddenly went away and then returned. The shape of the vulva would only affect the urine stream as she's urinating and would not cause her to dribble urine. This is all good information that you should share with the veterinarian that has been treating Willow, because it will help them identify the cause, or identify information that was not passed onto you about her current condition. If you are suspecting that Willow is not being treated appropriately, then you may consider seeking a second vet opinion. Most vets are comfortable with this decision and may even encourage it. Below is a short article that may be helpful for you to decide if it's time to seek a second opinion. https://www.petcoach.co/article/when-is-it-time-to-seek-a-second-veterinary-opinion/ I hope that helps.
