Can my dog take cat joint supplements for luxating patella?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 5 lbs

I have a 5 pound maltese and the vet gave some chewable joint supplements for his luxating patellas but I just realized it says feline formula for cats lol. He's 4 yrs old and has only been on them since Sunday. Are they the same as the sog formula or should I stop giving them to him strait away?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear that Tron has luxated patellas, and I hope they do not bother him much. It appears to me that there isn't anything in those toxic to dogs, and your veterinarian may use the cat version in order to have an easier dose for smaller dogs. That said, it would be a good idea to call your vet tomorrow and make sure they meant to script it this way and to make sure they are okay with you continuing the supplement as it is a script. Hope this helps!
