My parakeet is lethargic, hiding, and has diarrhea. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | 1 year and 8 months old

Our parakeet has not been playing, talking, yelling or anything. He is hiding his head inside a toy that is hanging and is just huddled in that spot for a few days. He comes out to eat but then comes out of his cage to go back in thaf spot. He even let my husband and I pet his back which he has never let us come near him. His bathroom looks like diarrhea - white and runny and black. Csn you tell us what is wrong with him?

Pepe is showing signs of illness. In birds hiding and lethargy are fairly nonspecific signs of illness. But by time a bird starts showing signs of illness they are often seriously sick. Birds are prey animals so use a lot of strength trying to hide signs of illness. Please get Pepe to an avian vet asap. This website may help you find one of you don't have one. Www.aav.org Keep his cage in a warm, draft free room and minimize stress and handling. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/sick-pet-birds-nursing-care Good luck, I hope Pepe is better soon.
