My puppy fell, now limping and favoring leg. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 17 days old | 32 lbs

Our pup Ella is still little, and gets very excited when anyone arrives at our home. We ignore her when she does this, but the behavior has continued. She jumped up today and clumsily fell down and landed on her left shoulder. Initially she whimpered and limped, but now she's just favoring her other leg. She's not the brightest, and still very excitable, so I'm worried she's still in pain. Should we take her to the vet?

If Eleanor is limping she is in some degree of pain. I would definitely think out going to your veterinarian because clumsy puppies are prone to breaking bones. She may just have a soft tissue injury but it's always better to err on the side of caution. I would also suggest you keep her crated or confined until you can get her to a vet to keep her from injuring herself further. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I hope it's just a mild injury!
