My dog passed a ribbon and has diarrhea. Is this normal or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 21 days old

My dog pooped out a ribbon earlier along with a bit of diahorrea. Is this normal when passing a foreign body? He's acting normal and his poo was normal this morning

Ziggy may have diarrhea secondary to GI inflammation from the ribbon. As long as he is acting normally, not lethargic, eating well and not vomiting I would just monitor him for now. You can try offering a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice to see if this firms up his stools. It is very important to monitor him for any abnormal signs especially vomiting or not eating. Strings and ribbons can cause a serious GI blockage so if any of the above signs develop Ziggy should be seen by a veterinarian right away. Also, if his diarrhea persists I would recommend seeing your veterinarian as it could be related to GI parasites or may require medication to resolve. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Ziggy's diarrhea resolves quickly!

It sounds like your dog has a severe case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon. The information can cause diarrhea and bloody stool. Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion (like eating a dead mouse), food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses. If Ziggy continues defecating blood (more than 48 hrs) I would recommend taking him in to the vet to be examined. He may need fluids to correct any dehydration, a fecal examination performed and antibiotics and/or probiotics to help the diarrhea clear up. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.

I would not be too concerned about this. If it continues or he starts having loose stool again then I would have the poop sample looked at by your vet. This could be just his body trying to balance itself back out but keep a close eye on him!

It is unlikely that the peanut butter is the culprit. Usually stomach upset will occur within 24 hrs of ingesting something. There is likely another cause here. You can try feeding Ziggy a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days to see if this can settle his stomach. You can also try over the counter Purina EN Gastrointestinal from your local pet store (if available). If he still can't get back to normal then a vet visit is best to get him checked out for possible other causes of his loose stool (ie parasites, underlying disorders) and proper treatment (i.e. Antibiotics, probiotics, etc). I hope that Ziggy feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.
