My indoor cat has skin sores and flea dirt, but no visible fleas. Is it fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 8 years and 3 months old | 15 lbs

I don't see any fleas on my car, and I have no bites. But my cat has sores on her spine and what looks like flea dirt. Cleared up after switching to a car food made for allergies, but has came back. Could it be fleas even though we don't see them on her, or in the house? She's an indoor cat.

Because adult fleas only represent a very small percentage of the flea population it is very possible Princess has fleas and you just aren't seeing them. I'd recommend using a good quality flea preventative like Frontline Plus, Revolution or Advantage. It usually takes 4 months of monthly treatment to fully eradicate a flea problem. Princess could also be having these skin issues related to a food allergy or environmental allergy so if the problem persists or gets worse you should have her examined by your veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I hope Princess's issue resolves quickly!
