Why is my kitten sneezing, drooling, and has watery eyes? Herpes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 17 days old | 2 lbs

I adopted a kitten from a shelter four days ago. I took her to the vet for a general exam. She was 14 wks old on 8/2/2016. She had coccidia and was treated, my vet checked and she is now clean. She is only 2lbs, even though she is now 18wks old. She sneezes, has watery eyes, foul odor from her rear, and wakes from drowning in her own drool. Any ideas what this is? My vet dismissed it and said it might be "herpes" so I ordered some Lysine.

Hi and thanks for your question! It is hard to say sight unseen, but yes, this could be feline herpes virus. When transmitted, it stays in the cat's system for the rest of they lives and can cause occasional upper respiratory signs. Drooling can be a sign associated with an upper respiratory infection as well. Lysine can help prevent symptoms but antibiotics will help to clear the infection. I hope this helps! Best wishes to you and Dynamite!
