Why does my parrot smell after bathing? Is soap necessary for parrots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | 16 years and 11 months old | 10.44 lbs

After I give my parrot (blue and gold macaw) a shower they smell sort of like petrichor. Is that normal? I have just been spraying her with water. Is there any sort of soap/cleanser I should be using on her?

It may be a "wet bird" odor that is normal. As long as she doesn't smell like that when dry, there is no cause for concern. Soap should not be used unless absolutely necessary as it can cause dry skin and strip feathers of natural oils. Warm water is all that is needed.
