My unspayed female dog is panting, nesting, and not eating. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | unspayed | 16 years and 9 months old | 70 lbs

I have a 7 year old female boxer that has never been spayed or mated. Last night I found her with a stuffed animal that she was licking profusely and was panting really hard. When I took the toy away she cried and was also nesting with her blankets and bed. Ever since, she hasn't ate nor been active like she usually is. She's been sleeping all day but also still panting really hard here and there which lasts about 30 minutes. Shes definitely not pregnant. What do I do? I feel so bad for her?

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! It sounds like Roxy is experiencing a pseudopregnancy or a false pregnancy. It is not wrong to have her seen by your Vet to rule out any other medical conditions and to rule out an infected uterus (pyometra). I've attached a link for more information. I hope this helps! https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/false-pregnancy-or-pseudopregnancy-in-dogs
