My dog's back leg shakes when standing, no pain. What's the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 23 lbs

Sometimes when my dog is standing on all fours, one of her back legs will begin to shake. She does not seem to be in pain, but I am concerned as a friend had a similar situation with his pet and it turned out to be cancer.

Shaking or quivering of a leg can be caused by so many things, including anxiety, pain, neurologic disease, muscular disease, bone disease, etc. I would recommend that Abbie be checked out by a vet. After thorough orthopedic and neurologic exams, the vet may get a better idea of what could be causing the issues. X-rays may be helpful for evaluated the bones and joints of the affected limb. Once your vet has a better idea of what could be the cause, then a medication trial can be used to see if it help with the shaking leg.

This can be pain or muscle weakness if there is arthritis or degenerative disease in his back. It can also be from fatigue if it occurs after activity. If it progresses or become more intense, then I would get your vet to check for any cause
