Why does my dog have a recurring draining bump on her chest?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 8 years and 11 months old

My 9 year old female spayed pug in good health, well cared for and not over weigh, has a small flesh colored bump about 1/4 inch on her side chest. Has drained. Seems to cause no pain when touched. It appeared about a year ago. I treated it with tea tree oil and it went away only to appear in the past month. It's not attached to her chest wall only in her skin. Not affecting her appetite or behavior. Warm water treatment along with tea tree oil. Any ideas?

If you've noticed it drain before, then it is a cyst. These usually occur when a gland is blocked and material builds up in the skin. They can go away and then come back. The only real cure for it is to have it surgically removed, but this is not usually indicated. The warm water compress may help it to rupture and drain again, but no guarantees. We usually advise benign neglect (ignoring it) and just watching it for any changes in growth or appearance. These often go away on their own after some time. I hope that helps.
