My senior dog has dry, flaky, pimple-like skin bumps. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 11 year old cocker spaniel has been getting more of these skin bumps that feel like a pimple and then get dry and flakey, when you pet him you can feel these bumps. Is there anything I can do to help makes these go away or lesson?

It is hard to tell without seeing it in person, but pimple like bumps often indicate an infection like a pyoderma. Sometimes medicated shampoo can be enough to get rid of the bumps, but other times they need oral antibiotics. I would recommend making sure he is on a good flea prevention and speaking with your vet about the possibility of a skin infection. I hope this helps!

Poor Henry. This looks like a potential skin infection. You could try to bathe him in a medicated shampoo like miconahex-triz shampoo twice a week and add some omega 3 fatty acids to his diet. I would also add some Benadryl twice a day just in case there is an allergy component. See link below. If he isn't improving, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to prescribe some antibiotics if needed. I hope this helps! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/#

It sounds like he could have a skin infection or an allergic dermatitis. You could bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo, like Epi-Soothe, and see if that helps. Otherwise, have your vet examine him to determine the cause and treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/ or a corticosteroid. You could also add Free Form Snip Tips to his diet to keep his skin and coat healthy.

Old dogs can get skin diseases and underlying conditions that can lead to this type of thing. It is not common for all old dogs however, so there is a disease process at play here. It is very rare to have such an older dog all of sudden have a food allergy, so I would not consider this a possible cause. Sensitive stomach issues usually cause vomiting and loose stool. I would consider having his skin tested through your veterinarian and then having baseline bloodwork done to check for any possible underlying causes (i.e. Cushings disease, Lupus) for Buster's skin problems. I wish you the best moving forward with Buster's skin condition. Take care.
