My dog ate a skunk and is vomiting. When should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 160 lbs

My dogs got sprayed by a skunk 12 days ago, today my dog puked up green bile filled with black fur so I went outside to check for a dead animal but all I found was black and white fur and two small bones. I'm worried my dogs may have eaten this whole skunk. Should they be taken to the vet?

I would recommend contacting your veterinarian, to see if the dog should have the Rabies vaccination updated. Depending on when they were last vaccinated, it may be recommended to Booster them if skunks are rabies vectors in your area. If there was only the one episode of vomiting, you can continue to monitor for any signs of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or pain which could indicate G.I. obstruction or problem from ingesting bones or pancreatitis if they ate a rotting carcass. But if they seem otherwise happy and healthy, then it seems the skunk got the worse end of the deal. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/skunk-spray-and-your-dog Thank you for using PetCoach.
