After dog surgery, when is it safe to run with internal stitches?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dalmatian | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 7 days old

My Dalmatian puppy is getting stiches out tomorrow. He had surgery due to intestinal obstruction, last thursday. He has been confined in a crate since he came home, so he is very board. Will it be safe for him to run and jump around once his external stiches are removed? Or will his internal stiches in this intestine still be at risk? Thank you.

Since Max had major abdominal surgery and has been confined I recommend gradually getting back to full activity after another week. You can let him free in the house and take him for longer leash walks, limiting fast running or jumping for another week. The intestinal incision should be fine but Max may become painful if he's too active to soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Max.
