My unspayed dog is bleeding with white clumps. Is it a miscarriage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Japanese Chin | Female | unspayed

A friend of mine has a female dog and a male dog (neither are fixed. I've told her that they need to be fixed but she won't listen). We think they may have mated and now (about 30 days later) the female is bleeding. I'm dogsitting for them and I've only had spayed females so I don't know what amount is normal but there's small white clumps and it seems like large puddles, is it possible that she's having a miscarriage? (She's 9 and medium sized and male is 2 and large)

Given her age and that she has had a recent heat, she may have a uterine infection (pyometra). This can be a serious infection if left untreated. Crystal should be examined by a veterinarian to be safe and treated if indicated. Surgery may be required if she has pyometra.
