Can my dog catch shingles or chickenpox from a human family member?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 years and 10 months old | 65 lbs

My sister has been diagnosed with Shingles and she lives with us. Can she have contact with my dog? Can my dog get the Chicken Pox virus? Or is she ok with handling him and petting him like always?

The specific type of virus that causes shingles is not transmissible to your dog. It should be completely safe for your sister to interact with Lucas as usual. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck!
