Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 8 months old | 79 lbs
Hello and thank you in advance for answering my question. I have an 11 year old male Labrador Retreiver and he is not neutered. He recently was seen for prostate issues, pain and an infection, per the vet that treated him. They are suggesting that he be neutered because they said he will continue having prostate issues, although this was the first and only time he has ever had a problem. I don't want to have him neutered, personal choice , but the vet is telling me I should. Any input would help

Neutering is the treatment of choice for benign prostatic hyperplasia and cases of abscess or infection. In some cases the prostate or prostatic cysts can enlarge and block urine flow out of the urethra resulting in a life threatening emergency. I strongly recommend neutering any male dogs with these isssues unless they are an extremely valuable breeding dog. Other than some discomfort after surgery which can be medically managed, neutering should only positively impact Max's quality of life. There may be an option of medical hormonal therapy for BPH but this is a lifelong medication and if stopped the prostate enlargement will recur.
