My dog is licking another dog's hair off. What causes it & how to stop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 10 months old | 24 lbs

I have 2 dogs and one has licked the hair off the other's back. It is a spot the size of a half dollar. Any suggestions?

It would be a little unusual for one dog to lick the same spot on another dog's back frequently enough to cause hair loss. If it's possible that there was some sort of lesion there before the licking started, or if the skin appears abnormal I'd recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian. If you're certain the hair loss is from licking alone you could try putting a T shirt on your dog as a barrier.
