Why does my Syrian hamster freak out when I offer a dust bath?

Thanks for reaching out about Daabool and including a photo. Hamsters are desert animals, highly capable of extracting water from their food. Biting is a common fear response in hamsters, and continuing to earn/win trust by offering treats, keeping movements slow and deliberate. Try removing Daabool from his environment with a scoop or cup, to move to a neutral territory (i.e. table top). Then see if interactions are aggressive. Sometimes its just territorial defense. Hamsters definitely love to run on wheels. This does not necessarily mean they are not interested in human interaction. Potko may just be a little apprehensive about his new relationship with his owner, in this case, you. Even if he resists, I would suggest taking him out of the cage a little bit every day and handling him. Offer him treats and toys to play with so that he associates you with something positive. Eventually, he will understand that you are a friend. I would increase interaction with him little by little every day. Do not start with hours of interaction immediately. This will shock Potko a little too much.

Unfortunately, some hamsters are more fearful and aggressive than others. This is just their personality. I would try to offer him daily treats but avoid touching him for awhile. Over time, slowly just try to pet him but do not antagonize him or pick him up. If he lets you pet him, give him another treat. Hopefully, over time, he will begin to warm up to you but unfortunately, not all do.

You are a giant potential predator to little Sharky, so you'll need to be patient and compassionate while he gets used to you. Make sure that he feels comfortable in his cage by providing lots of places for him to hide and nesting/burrowing material. Give him a couple more days to adjust to his new surroundings without being bothered, then start slow by introducing your hand into the cage where he can see it. Leave it there for a minute, then put a treat in the cage. Repeat this for 10-15 minutes every day. He'll start to associate your presence with a positive event - a tasty treat. After a few days of this, put your hand in the cage with the treat in it. Even if he doesn't come up to your hand, remove your hand after about a minute, and leave the treat behind. Hopefully, he will start approaching your hand. Again, association is everything - increase y

I would watch your hamster to determine when to start trying to tame him. If he is starting to come out and explore the cage/environment for longer periods of time then he is starting to settle into his new home and be more comfortable.

Just let her set up the environment that way she likes it. You can't force her to use the house. Some hamsters just prefer to sleep in an open nest in the corner of their cages rather than choosing to sleep inside a house/hideout. This is pretty normal. If you want to try a different house you could do that. Some don't like those clear, see-through houses. They prefer something darker.

I am sorry to hear about your frustration with your hamster! I Am sure you want to be able to tame him. Many hamsters can be tamed but it can require time and patience. The older a hamster is, the more difficult it may be to train them as they are already used to not having humans handle them. Try to only interact with your hamster when he is already awake. This may mean the night time since usually they are sleeping during the day time. If you wake him he is going to be upset already! Don't bother him if he is eating or drinking. Start off by just placing some treats into his cage and then setting your hand inside the cage, a little ways from the treats, so the hamster can get to the treats but doesn't have to touch you to do so. Leave your hand there for several minutes without moving it. Repeat this daily, until the hamster is coming and eating the treats. Any sudden change in behavior should be addressed by your veterinarian. Frequently, illness or injury are the cause. Look Princess over for any obvious signs of injury. Try not to get bitten again. Survey the area in and around the cage for any negative stimuli. This may include loud noises, strong vibrations, bright light, cold drafts or high traffic. Reduce or eliminate any if found. Wash your hands thoroughly before handling her, especially if you have other pets. Their scent may cause her stress. Rub some of her bedding in your hands to get her scent onto you and approach slowly. If she stresses out, stop and try again later. Move slowly and talk softly around her. Offer small treats and allow her to come up to you. Be patient and consistent. It may take time for her to become comfortable with you again.

You have only had him for a week. You need to be patient, let him smell your hand/finger, pet him a little , let him climb on your hand, rather than forcing him to be on your hand by picking him up. It will take time before he trusts you, It can take 2 months before he is comfortable with you picking him up. I apologize, I am not sure if I understand your question. I am not sure if you mean that there is something on Koda's coat, or if you are concerned about drying his coat and skin out by using this product. I will speak to a normal hamster, and if this is not correct, please re-post your question. Normal hamsters typically are very fastidious, which means they are very concerned about their appearance. :) They are very good at grooming and keeping clean, and often do not require bathing at all. This can change as hamsters get older, or if they get sick. The reason for this is that when these changes occur, hamsters may not feel well and then they don't put as much effort into their grooming. Excessive bathing can result in drying of the skin and coat, which can be irritating and may cause Koda to begin scratching or bothering his skin. I would recommend using caution with bathing if Koda is a normal, healthy hamster. I hope that helps to answer your question!
