My dog has a sudden cough and gagging. Is it kennel cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 8 years and 9 months old

My Boston pug has a cough out of no where. We were at a pet event with a quite a few dogs the day before. My boyfriends dog has been playing with other dogs that have kennel cough. I think that's probably what it is. It's a cough that sometimes leads to a gag like she may throw up. Do I go to the vet?

You are correct that Kona likely has kennel cough, which is a highly contagious respiratory disease. I would take her into the vet tomorrow. Kennel cough is typically self limiting and can take up to three weeks for symptoms to completely resolve, but her symptoms may benefit from some medications such as antibiotics. Medications can lessen the severity of the symptoms, and may speed up recovery.
