My dog's spay incision looks bloody. Can I wait until morning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dogs spay area is looks bloody - we have been with her 24/7 (4days post op) but can't supervise overnight. We have bandaged for now to stop itching etc and had advice on here from a vet to see a vet, which we will do tomorrow morning (it's 7.40pm on a Sunday at the moment!) just wanted to make sure that it's okay to have the bandage on overnight and to wait until tomorrow to see the vet. Many thanks

It's a great idea to bandage it to prevent itching, and as long as the incision isn't excessively bleeding, then it is ok to wait until the morning. I certainly understand you can't watch her all night! You might consider getting a recovery suit, as that may help prevent her from itching the site. If you have a crate, I would keep her in the crate overnight to keep her from moving around too much. You are doing the right thing by taking her to a vet first thing in the morning :-)
